October
A piece that evokes cold and blurry imagery. The piano is tuned an octave lower to uncover a growling resonance adding a unique depth to the final mix. The murky orchestration paints pictures of moving shadows in the dark. The instrumental version features a solo violist playing the main melody which is echoed and at times anticipated by the accompanying orchestra forming a twisted musical conversation.
A Day of Life
Lighter in character but extremely emotionally driven. A Day of Life forms a short tone poem that begins with a sense of freshness and positivity. This mood becomes increasingly desperate until a climax is reached. The final section depicts the night.
In the beginning, this work was an experiment in utilising bitonal harmonies with a musical language that remains consonant.
